about
I wrote and recorded this song on Thursday, January 19th, the day before the inauguration, frightened by the coming days, inspired by the upcoming march later that weekend, and concerned about what happens when that moment passes. “What’ll we do then?”
This song is my contribution. It's my protest poster, my chant, and my social media rant. I’m not out to preach to you and I’m not out to insult you. To quote Seth Godin I’m here to say “look, I made this” and I hope you can get something out of it. I hope you’ll feel angry with me and I hope you’ll be inspired like me.
If it isn’t your speed then I hope you’ll stick around for the next sad-bastard-anthem I’ve got on deck. It’s coming soon and it’s a good one, I promise.
Peace, love, and decency.
Matt Sucich
P.S. Thank you, to my friends and peers for nudging me to share it, and to my old pal, and longtime collaborator, James Vanderberg for providing his powerful illustrations.
lyrics
Count To Ten
----------
He's a psycho, he's a thief / he lies in real-time and in his dreams / probably about being king / in a jungle of mirrors and money • Wakes up alone to start the day / someone like him strokes his mane / someone else like him says "you look great" / and someone else like him hands him a blade / what'll we do then? • Go get your lover, go get your friends / we'll march in numbers around the lion's den / what we do next is gonna get to him / wear red meat hats and count to ten • He'll puff his chest and prophesy / he'll wear your flesh and say "it's mine" / you turn your back and he'll stab you twice / once for blood and once for spite • Yes he's a liar and he's a thief / he'll save himself over you and me / what kind of animal, what type of beast / would eat his own family / what'll we do then? • Go tell your lover, go tell your friends / we'll march in numbers around the lion's den / what we do next is gonna get to him / wear red meat hats and count to ten • What'll we do when he wakes again / and steps out on his balcony / preaching power & preaching hate / what will we do when that balcony breaks? • Go get your lover, go get your friends / we'll march in numbers around the lion's den / what we do next is gonna get to him / wear red meat hats and count to ten.
